Supporting Local 294

30/12/2015

In the spirit of capacity building, and recognizing that this extends to the larger OPSEU membership, we have participated in several events over this year to support our brothers and sisters in Local 294 who had been on strike for eight months. The strike ended at the end of November and these members will be returning to work January 9th. They will also be going to Arbitration to settle some outstanding issues not resolved during bargaining.

During the time they were on strike we donated $250.00 dollars to their cause, participated in a rally in May, spearheaded the organizing of a rally that took place in July at Speakers Corner to help raise awareness of their issues, and stood on the picket line with them.

In response to a request to support one of the striker families for Christmas, we purchased food and gifts for each member of one family.

We received the following after our Christmas donations to the striker family were received:

Hi Ruth just wanted to give you an update.  Your striker picked up your wonderful gifts on Friday.  She was overwhelmed with your Local ' s generosity.  She kept say "no"  "really" "this can't be all for me".  She was in shock and so very happy.  I took this pic on Friday of her picking up her gifts.

She posted the following day on Facebook with a picture of her Christmas tree that said "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas"

I will never forget the kindness and support you have shown this member and this Local.  Merry Christmas Ruth to you and your members!

We held our annual food drive last month during November 16-30, 2015.  640 pounds of food was collected and donated amongst eight organizations within Waterloo Wellington Dufferin. Here are the organizations we supported this year:

* Fergus Food Bank
* Food Bank in Mount Forest
* Some local families supported by CMHA in Mount Forest
* Hope House in Guelph
* Orangeville Food Bank
* Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition
* Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank
* Waterloo Region Food Bank

The team that won the pizza party, donating 397 pounds of food is Team 3, which includes the following offices: Silvercreek, Fergus, Mount Forest and Orangeville.

Congratulations to everyone for your efforts to make this year’s food drive a success! A special thank you to all individuals who assisted with site set up’s, maintaining sites throughout the food drive, weighing the food, packing it up and delivering it to the recipient organization. We could not have done this without you!
