Disability Rights Caucus Call for Applicants

24/6/2016

The OPSEU Disability Rights Caucus is inviting OPSEU members with a disability as defined under the Ontario Human Rights Code to apply for a position on the Disability Rights Caucus.
The role of the representative on the Disability Rights Caucus is to increase awareness and understanding of human rights and equity issues as they relate to individuals with disabilities and to liaise with the respective Provincial Committees to identify barriers that prohibit full participation of persons with disabilities within OPSEU and the broader society.
The Selection Committee will screen the applications and make a recommendation to the Caucus based on the following five considerations:
  •  geographic balance of the seven (7) regions
  •  a wide range of disabilities with a balance of visible and non-visible disabilities
  •  mix of community and union activity
  •  gender balance
  •  a desire to network, advocate, educate, and increase equality for individuals with disabilities
Please forward applications to Libby Zeleke in the Equity Unit (e-mail to lzeleke@opseu.org) or fax to 416-448-7419 no later than 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2016.

Fighting for our members

16/6/2016

Hello Brothers and Sisters

As you know, management at CMHA WWD and CMHA Peel have agreed to transfer our Dufferin members from WWD to Peel.  We have been active in representing our sisters in Dufferin to ensure their rights are protected.

Today (June 16) we were at the Labour board again to deal with the unfair labour practice filed against WWD and Peel.

Our concerns were:
  1. the resignation clause in the offer letters given to Dufferin staff from Peel requiring our members to resign from WWD prior to accepting Peel's offer.
  2. the clause added by WWD exempting them from paying severance to transferring Dufferin staff
Both of these clauses have been removed by management at WWD and Peel. This, along with an access agreement  that we can live with settled the unfair labour practice issue.

Since the transfer of our members triggers a PSLRTA, a campaign to certify CMHA Peel will start June 23 and go to July 15. The certification vote will be July 19-20.  These dates are all part of the access agreement negotiated today during mediation.  We will be active in sharing with CMHA Peel staff the benefits of joining Ontario's largest public service union.
