Meet our new staff rep......   Cheryl Wing

So you may not know, but we have a new staff rep!

Cheryl Wing came to the Guelph Regional Office this summer and jumped in with two feet to support our local.

I asked Cheryl to answer some questions so you'd get a chance to "meet" her:
How long have you been involved with OPSEU?
2001-2011 OPSEU member activist,
2011 – present OPSEU Staff
In what capacities?
Local Secretary, Treasurer, VP
Regional Mobilizer (Developmental Services Sector 2)
Colleges Part-time Workers Organizer
Region Educational Co-facilitator
Sector 2 Divisional Executive, Communications Officer
Negotiations Team Member
EERC member
OPSEU Support Staff (Accounting, Membership Services, Resource Centre, Negotiations, Job Security Units)
Co-ordinated/Central bargaining team member

What are your thoughts on how a staff rep can support our local and our members?
Educate and  Empower - My number one goal is to provide the tools and resources to help members, help themselves.  I am a firm believer in the proverb, “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”.  I don’t want to simply provide an answer, I want to provide the tool to assist members in finding the answer themselves.

Mobilize – “Strength in numbers!”  I can’t emphasize this enough.  When an employer sees an engaged and mobilized membership, they are more likely to engage in positive labour relations all around.  A Local Executive or Bargaining team is only as strong as the members behind them. As a staff rep I want to help a local obtain this.

What's one thing you love? The genuine passion and dedication I see in my colleagues in their ongoing fight for OPSEU members.
What's one thing you hate? Bullies
What's one thing you wish? I wish I could sing
What's one thing you're grateful for?  My Family.  A good work life balance is essential.

Many thanks to Cheryl for her graciousness

One of our members is attending this conference on maintaining the health and safety of staff in mental health facilities.  Here are some tweets from the event.

General Membership Meeting Thursday October 20th

12/10/2016

It's time...once again...for another General Membership Meeting!!!  (did you hear the crowd cheer too?)

Much of our time next Thursday will be used for elections.  We have vacant positions on the executive (secretary, 2nd vp), a trustee (needed twice a year to double check Susan's excellent book-keeping), and the bargaining team.  We will be electing four people to the team, and they along with our tireless president will be our representatives at the table for the upcoming negotiations HOO-RAH!  Stand Together For One Another!

The executive and trustee positions are nearly at the end of their term - full elections for the Local Executive Committee (LEC) as well as trustees will be held next year.  So this is a great time to "try out" being an officer or trustee.

Can't make the meeting?  Use the nomination form below to nominate someone in your absence.  Just complete it and send it back to us and we'll bring it forward on your behalf.  This can also be used if you will be there but the person you're nominating won't - the signed form will serve as acceptance of the nomination.
